Posted: 03 May 2007 Hi all, what do you think is the best photo you've ever taken (of a reptile/amphibian). It would be interesting to see what qualities you value most in a photo e.g. sharpness, background, etc... I'll start the ball rolling with this, the 1st ever snake I found Hope to hear/see from the other members.

Posted: 04 May 2007 Blimey - we all have our favourite photos. For articles and books you have to show an animal in good detail, especially for such as field guide and id purposes. But the most satisfying is to photo reptiles in situ. And as i have been lurking around the UK heaths since the ice age I have takes a few. Unfortunately, most are on film and with my agency. Got a good variety though - adders, courting,dancing, mating,giving birth, smooth snakes mating, males fighting, feeding, giving birth. Sand lizards, digging, just lying around. Also grass snakes etc etc including a four and a half footer plus of course exotic herps and other animals. Many taken in situ. Posted: 15 Sep 2007 Very nice photos! I see your viviparous lizard has half a tail - a lot of the ones round me do as well, but i've no idea what's doing it! Even the two babies that I found a few days ago had little stumps for tails P.S. Probably my best Zl Pic... also looks to have a regenerated tail tip, from when it was a baby - otherwise, a perfect one!

Posted: 17 Sep 2007 Yeah, it's a shame. I've found very few with full tails. I assume it's birds or something which has caused them to drop them. However the lizards I see in Spain very rarely have dropped tails. Very odd.

Posted: 17 Sep 2007 Yes, I've noticed that as well - could it be that you just see more in Spain? I think that out of about 20 lizards at one place near me, only 2 or 3 have full tails... maybe birds, possibly dogs or perhaps tourist children! tourist: 'Look mummy, a snake!' me to myself: 'well, no actually you don't get snakes here - it's a slow worm' tourist: 'got him... AAAAAArrrggggghhhhhhhhh, MUMMY!!!!!!!' The slow worm dropped it's tail after being grabbed by it and the girl found out that 'snakes' bleed a lot when you squeeze them!! When it's tourist seasn I find quite a few slow worms dead by the side of the road near a certain car park and also along some of the paths, all with very little tail..... I'm quite glad most of the injured reptiles I've seen in my sites have been natural causes (next to a railway, so I can only assume some have had close encouters) as well as there being many birds, and cats around. Even though it's close to a school, it seems they are left in peace, which is nice. I've seen one grass snake whihc was killed by a dog though. Gravid too, which was rather sad.

Posted: 18 Sep 2007 I'm stuck up in rainy Cumbria - the dreaded tourist season during the summer months makes travel along narrow country lanes nearly impossible for me, but it's alright outside of it, because the roads to the lakes near me are deserted which makes them good for biking; with steep hills and sharp turns the fun never ends Concerning reptiles and school - there are some lizards at my school which are killed by a select few people who find it funny to set fire to them with lighters and to squash them in books Dan www.randacumbria.moonfruit.com |
